English Countryside: Dorset "A level of detail God would be proud of" Lo folks, In 2005 it was suggested to us that Operation Flashpoint was lacking an English island. High Definition Scenery (HDS) Mod was created and swung into action practising building detailed islands like Michelle. When Armed Assault was announced it was decided that the English Countryside (ECS) project would be shelved until the new game was released. Laura Island was developed to show the community what we were capable of. With the successes of Laura we went dark. Each buying copies of ArmA, we spent the winter testing and practising, discovering how far we could push the game engine. Re-emerging in the spring with a larger team we dusted off the ECS project and began compiling a depository of scenery objects. With news filtering through that tool release is eminent we have decided its time to go topside with our definitive project. Ladies and Gents, HDS presents the English Countryside Project. 4.3 x 3.1 miles of the Queens finest, greenest land. Utilising every resource available from Satellite data to OS maps, hundreds of photographs to area visits HDS aims to bring Armed Assault its first REAL environment copied from mother natures playground itself. From every field to under every branch no hedge, tree or log will be left out. What you see out your bedroom window will be what you get. If this doesn't scare you the startled animals will. God save the Queen! Awesome dude Gothic Paradise, our resident modeler, has been busy turning photographs of everyday objects into models. Below is a teaser of the work hes been pumping out. We aim to get as many English objects into game as possible. Gates, fences, telegraph poles, bins, greenery and wildlife we're producing a pack of each plus many more. These will be released shortly after our first ECS release goes live. Of course, we are working on animating as much scenery as possible. Gothic Paradise and Strabo are coding in animations for opening gates, working electric fences and much more. You can track our progress on our website www.freewebs.com/elliot_carver and we'll keep you posted on the ArmA.info forums. For now here are GP's pics and a few teaser shots from our finial testing work. *note* Better sized pics (links) can be found on my website HERE Cheers, HDS TEAM Final Tests -------------------- |

Everything you see in these two photos as far as you can see is going into ArmA! To give you some idea where we are on the satellite image. The photos are taken from slap bag in the middle looking towards the top and the bottom of the pic. Cheers Carver -------------------- |

Looks very nice . You should do 'up-north' afterwards, North York Moors would be suitable for large scale operations.

Lo folks,
Cheers again for the good words. Makes the hard work worth it @ Old Bear: Yes, I couldn't agree with you more. There is a green in Halstock and 3 pubs in the area that i know of ... including my local heh heh. They will all be put into ECS. @ Linker: Gothic Paradise, awesome RL friend and HDS modeler is going to join up and answer your question as i'd probably hash it up lols As for news. Been out and about 'on location' today with GP working out how were going to devide up the areas and approch the project. Its going to be interesting getting the scale right. Cheers, Carver -------------------- |

Great stuff! I've always planned to make the South Lakes in the North West of England, and knowing there's a mod out there building English objects, i'm suddenly much more interested.

Hi all
wow id never have expected so many modders to be from around our neck of the woods... we may have to look at a bit of a LAN meet at some point. Carver, I saw that you are using 3DStudio max.. why not Oxygen? Actualy im using a cool little freeware modeler called Wings 3D but put simply.. its what I use. Iv found Oxygen to be lacking the utility of a fully fledged 3D Modeling program. It just hasnt got the finite control I need. Not that im getting at the programers at BIS who I have a deep respect for, being a programer myself. QUOTE(Old Bear) Do you plan a Pub addon and a criket game addons? English village without a green and a pub is like ... well, I can't think about it ! As Carver said, we will be putting in everything we can. So expect some very nice looking buildings This also touches on a subject me and Carver have discussed alot over the last few weeks. Is there any point to doing stunning buildings (internaly) that are, or apear to be scaled correctly if every time you go into them you have to face the fear of being stuck inside that exquisitly made bar with a beer pump sticking out of your chest . We will definatly be looking at this problem in more depth when we come to it and I know Im going to be working on buildings alot over the next few months. -------------------- - HDS Model Maker

Just a question, and you may already have an answer that I missed.
Anyway.. is the area going to be the exact elevations, roads etc from the OS maps that you have ? This will be very interesting. -------------------- |

Carver is rearly the man for this question but. Yes. We will try to get the elevations as close to real as possible. I think the prog Carver uses allows the overlay of several types of infomation including elevations. -------------------- - HDS Model Maker

Indeed, the project sounds very compromising. Considering the quality of Laura Island, I can only say I'm looking forward to see results soon!

QUOTE(pMASTER) Indeed, the project sounds very compromising. Considering the quality of Laura Island, I can only say I'm looking forward to see results soon! I agree with you on Laura. It was a very good island... i just hope myself and any others that contribute work to this project can live up to the standard Carver has set us. -------------------- - HDS Model Maker

Looks like a great project, all the best for it!
heck maybe if you can pull this off sucessfully you can do the real 'up north': Scotland: western scotland would be brilliant terrain for any ArmA game. But yes, good luck with the task you have at the moment looking forward to seing news here and in the BI forums about it -------------------- Never before in the history of man, was so much buggered up by so few.
