BlasTech.
Their E-11 blaster rifle has gained a legendary reputation across the galaxy. Of course bumping into Jedi will still be somewhat awkward but you can't have everything, right?

I won't answer the first question since it's a matter of requirements, (possible) arms embargoes and budget. And well an AK-47 covered in cow dung will be a "better" weapon if fired by an SAS man than a brand new HK416 will be in the hands of an african war criminal.

Based on export and global use (some of) the best manufacturers are:
FN Herstal (FAL, FNC, SCAR) - Also produces the M4 for the US now
H&K (G3, G36, 416, 417)
IMI (Galil, Tavor)
Izhmash (AK-47, 74 and 100-series)
SIG (550, 552)

Of course, the EM-2 would have been better than both of them tongue.gif

Based on what it eventually became, the SA-80 ... nope tongue.gif

Perhaps the caliber would have been better though ... unsure.gif

Actually the SA80 was based off the L64, (which in turn is based on the AR-18). I can't find anything on the EM-2 internals, but it was proven to be more reliable than the FAL and M14 in US Army trials.

It was however a pain in the arse to actually produce them because of all of the bevelling an extrusions.

Okay, you've got me. Now I need to point out something that's a really curious thing in my eyes: isn't it interesting that most innovations in the field of contemporary rifle design are actually many decades old and that even that which is called state of the art only is a modern adoption of old designs? Sometimes when I watched futuristic or sci-fi movies (like 'Book of Eli') where people run around with AK-47s and whatnot I thought that would be cheap production design but now I'd almost call it accurate.

The best assault rifle in the world is the one used by a soldier that know how to use it and how to equip it with out over equip it.
I have seen many soldier putting sh*t on ther rifles making the same weight as a SAW. And when you ask them what they are using all the stuff for,
the normal anser is it looks cool. And a rifle that looks cool is normaly the worst to use in combat.
I have been a soldier for 9 years now, in and out of combat deployment.
And my team mostly only equip our rifles with the basic stuff we need, not what to look cool.

So i say the best assault rifle in the world is the one in the hands of a soldier that know how to use it and how to equip it.
It can be a M16, a AK47 or a TAR-21, in the right hands they are all just as deadly. smile.gif

Just my 5cents.

And to let you know how my team i equiped.
Me, C8IUR M203, EOTECH, Light and Laser
NCO, C8IUR M203, Elcan, Light and Laser
Medic, C8IUR, Elcan, Grip, Light and Laser
AT Gunner, C8IUR, Aimpoint, Light and Laser (M134 or Carl Gustav)
Ass AT Gunner, C8IUR, Elcan, Light and Laser (M134 or Carl Gustav ammo)
MG Gunner, MK48, Elcan, Light and Laser.
