Dear players, addonmakers, (game) server & website hosts and all others in our dedicated community,

Addon Makers for Authors' Rights (AMAR) is a sizeable group of content creators for games developed by Bohemia Interactive with a common interest in informing the community about the do's and don'ts of content usage and sharing to support mutual understanding and cooperation efforts. For this purpose we have created a website containing Frequently Asked Questions and useful information about ownership rights, permission requests, terms of use and other related matters that can help addonmakers to use already existing content with the permission of the original creator(s) to save time.

We hope that you will find this information useful to expand your knowledge and support your fellow community members. The website can be found at the following address:

http://amar.arma3.fr/
Alternatively:
http://amar.arma2.fr/

Kind regards,
AMAR

P.S. Thanks go out to tom_48_97 for help with the web design and hosting.

An interesting subject indeed. Just out of curiosity, how pressing an issue is unauthorized content usage exactly? As for this board I remember only one case that wasn't solvable on an one-PM-basis.

It depends on the game involved, but has always been a problem since OFP. As a former newsposter and moderator of this site and ofp.info I have had to deal with many more cases than just one that wasn't solvable by just a single PM. Some simply didn't know what was allowed and what wasn't, and those were often convinced to change their approach with a single PM, but a great many more denied and argued to trick me into thinking the content was theirs.

The problems in ArmA2 have sky rocketed since DayZ was released. This has drawn in many players which while great for BIS has unfortunately also drawn in many opportunistic people that have been making money off of server packages and "donations" that give access to better equipment that often consists of ArmA2 addons being edited and redistributed without permission. Before it was about claiming glory and recognition, now it's about server hosts making hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month through monetizing the hard work of others without even acknowledging the original author by not giving credit where it is due or even flat-out denying someone's ownership rights. With parts of the DayZ community the following attitude is common place, it's been complained about a lot.

"Everything on ArmAholic is open source so may be used in any way"

Rather every addon for any BIS game is freeware meaning it can be distributed without money being charged for it. Open source is the same but may also be freely edited, a license type that most addons are not distributed under.

how pressing is issue ? yes, on those websites maybe once, in some new community parts... dayz it is 99%

dayz community believes that addon is something which they can use anyhow they want , which only stops addonmakers and modders from release public addons

so issue is important , although not in our military Arma community which is correct in 99%
oposite is dayz community @pMaster - dayz community members even dare to say that addon doesn't belong to addonmaker and released content = no copyrights and no permission needed to obtain,

word "opensource" is used to define what many dayz community players, some moders, admins etc. think , because they really believe and say that "if you released addon now it is ours and we can do whatever we want"

athough some of us tried to say to them "addon belongs to addonmaker" they either call you dirty words or say "addon belongs to Bohemia Interactive", when few of us tried to told them this is not true, they either called us dirty words or ignored , one guy heard "stfu" etc. (i was called "whore" or "i will not kiss your ass for addons" etc)
dayz is killing addonmaking because many addonmakers do not want to release content which should be used by players in Arma for free, while in DayZ mods/servers/admins packages it is used to collect money etc.

DayZ community is different than mature military community of Arma, so we have to teach them that addon is made to be played free by end-user (player) of Arma2,

in the past we were doing addons and mods so end-user (player) can put them into addon folder, play missions, create missions in editor etc. etc.
now usage of addons because of dayz changed, some people repack addons, some people put them on servers and want money from players for playing them etc.
donations were accepted in community since ever, but only for orginal authors , dayz sometimes forces donations to for example have "pay-to-win" vip-equipment, or simply to "pay for server" or "donate mod" which mod doesn't created single model neither single texture and whole this mod is "pack other people addon into one zip and set paypal"

and we fight with this if we want still to make addons, mods etc. with safety feeling that end-user downloads our voluntary work for free and noone except authors get cent

Bohemia Tools are released, anyone can make models, islands, animations rtm, whatever,
problem is that they not want to do, not have skill , but have only one skill - how to turn your addons into their financial profit , any suggestion to stop ends with "you whore" etc. (with full approbate from official forum moderation)
if you created content for one mod, they believe that you must give this content to anyone other

i have been here fron Day1 allmost of OFP and all the way to now and i have seen alot of addons used in the wrong way, and addon makers not asking for premision to use addons and edit them.
But in many casses addon makers/mods have slowed down progres just by beeing hard heads and not see that some one maybe can make ther stuff better then they are in the first place.
if teams like BAS, CBT and more wher more open back in the OFP days, i belive that today the community world have been bigger and the addons allot beter, just by charing technology and understanding.

Sorry for my bad english writing this fast in an airplane tongue.gif

It's the creator's right to decide what he wants to do with his content, though cooperation and sharing is always preferred if the creator has no objections about it or legal restrictions. By that we mean voluntary cooperation where both sides have agreed on the intended use prior to the use and not to have to find out about it afterwards by seeing it the "latest work" of somebody else which you spent many hours on posted on some forum or Youtube and someone continuing to claim that the work is his and not yours blues.gif

The extensive theft of property has caused many addonmakers to be more cautious about who they share their work with and in a way a bit cynical about permissions unless they've known the other party for years.
