Lo folks,

ArmA Ptarmigan System for Airsoft

I wasnt sure where to put this one so ive put it in here. If this is the wrong place i trust teh admins to shove it where it belongs lol.
This isnt an ArmA addon. This a real life tool under development using ArmA. Myself and the airsoft team sat down and brainstormed ideas to improve our team. One idea that was tabled and has been brought forward for production is this:

----------
One problem we have had through our years of operation was communication and squad interaction. Quite often as it is with the site we play at, GroundZero, one of us will die, do 5 mins dead time and then be unable to catch up with the rest of the squad. Other problems have included being unable to get squads down into needed targets in time for Intel drops and providing back up to other teams. To solve this problem we have decided to 'upgrade' our maps and communications.
What we plan to do is using GPS we shall map out GoundZero. Having an accurate map is vital to time and distance factors being correct. With this map we shall use it to model the site into Armed Assault. HDS modelers will also model in bases and checkpoints along with other site features. This will give us a perfect 3D representation of Ground zero which we can then load into a laptop.
Using the real time mission editing addons currently under development we hope to be able to show where our units are at any one time in the battlefield. We are looking into ways of alowing GPS markers on team members to 'talk' to ingame units to show their exact location in real time. Using the power of ArmA's mission editor and a radio scanner to listen into enemy communications we will be able to insert enemy units into the 3D map. This will alow us to see what threats our squad on the ground will face.
Using this technology we hope also to be able to run scenarios of attacks on positions in training and on the field, the map working as a guide to show us the best routes into and out of an enemy base.
Basically were going to create a 3D map on ArmA of our local airsoft site. Use GPS and radio scanners to locate and display squad and enemy information in real time. It will be installed onto a laptop and be mounted in a mil spec case. We hope the System will give us an even greater tactical superiority over the battlefield.

The UK Military use a system like this know as "Ptarmigan". It is their core communications (SATCOM/Skynet) mapping and computer network system.
----------

Just posting this up really to get you folks reactions, thoughts and ideas on the project. One of the hardest bits will be to ge the GPS locations on one program to interact into ArmA in game. Any ideas on how to do this?

cheers for reading folks, cool.gif

ROFL paintballer per chance? tongue.gif

It would be the RN Marines and id spend 6 months sitting round firing blanks at targets. Airsoft I get to go to war and kill all my friends every few weeks. That and i doubt the Navy would let me duel wield MP5k's biggrin.gif

Cheers dude

Ummmmm... "war", "kill"... you sure you're talking about airsoft? I see it more as a... milsim game with the main objective of simply having fun. Well, prolly do you, but by few, should I say, expert airsofters (prolly knew what airsoft was by the time we were born) I've learnt to avoid the "real" terms. Might be the partial reputation the "sports" has here, but meh, anyways...

Nice idea - didn't you or somebody mention this like a year ago already?

I'm sure her Majesties Naval infantry is nothing as dull as that!

I killed my friends all weekend just passed, but our weapons make a little bit more smoke and noise than yours wink.gif

Blanks = firing at enemy party (real people)

Live= Targets

Can't imagine plastic balls and a pack of wannabe army walts would even COMPARE!

I think it would wink.gif.

Im not being funny, but in most simulated exercises where your fighting against your friends/another friendly regiment your only going to be using blanks or a system similar to MILES. You may have the bangs and the flashes of the rifles (which is reduced with the use of Blank Firing Adapters anyway) but you hardly get the pain tongue.gif.

In most cases you will see the use of pyrotechnics, both sight and sound, in any well organised Airsoft or Paintball exercise.

Just remember the army isn't for everyone, some people are just too week, some people may have some sort of disability, for some people it may not be there thing (remember the army isn't just about going around shooting things and blowing things up smile.gif). For these kind of people that still look for fun outdoors, and don't necessarily want to risk of getting killed, Airsoft and Paintballing is the way to go smile.gif. Although I dont do either lol.

You cant really compare the two subjects. With the forces you get a life style. With airsoft I get a release. Yes in the military you get tanks and planes and all the cool stuff but your just one unit in the big picture of the battle. With airsoft I get to do all the things you military guys cant. Duel Wield, Rambo, spray and pray. Cosh people occasionaly ^^ With airsoft you get the hardcore fighting. U duel wield up 2 mp5k's...do an insane one-man-army charge on a heavily fortified possition ... then u suddenly realise you killed 15 people, everyone on your team is patting you on the back and your a hero for the next 10 mins. Then you go and do it again and again and again. Then at the end of the day you get to go home - free. Military your on beck and call to be bossed around at work 24/7 and there is no escape. Thats what put me off.

It still can't compare to watching an entire enemy compound sent back to the stone age in less than 30 seconds. Nothing can.

Except possibley one of those Atomic Cannons.
