Right, so I may have accidentally intentionally deleted the last topic instead of a post because it was getting too large and as per tradition, it's time to start again.

You all know the rules.
You make the thread. We ramble. We laugh. We cry. We poke fun at Rewan and especially MiniMark.

Is pMaster drunk?
Is Indigo teasing JdB with her sensuous mysteries?
Where in the world is Deadeye?
Why aren't I drunk yet?

All these questions and more can be answered by what remains of our insane regular contributors.

1. Statistically speaking, pMaster is drunk over 110% of the time. I didn't even know this was possible! ohnoo.gif
2. A paranoid man would read that as you implying something about JdB's personal life, with them being mysteries and such.

Vain hopes to be honest, apparently it travelled 20 miles inland, here's hoping the Emergency services can cope after affects could be just as bad.

A lot of the pacific islands have been evacuated seeing as a fair few are barely above water as it is.

Jesus, what a mess. Mother Earth can be quite a bitch sometimes.

The news say the Fukushima power plant is on the verge of a core meltdown...

My thoughts are with the victims.

Is it only me or do the incidents accumulate? Haiti, Chile, New Zealand, now Japan?

Posted by: Daniel Mar 11 2011, 15:55

Scary footage on the bbc homepage. Some bits look like bad CGI. mellow.gif http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ Here's hoping the reactor incident doesn't amount to anything.

Bloody hell, some of those videos are intense. Just watched the fire at the industrial site, that fireball is huge.

On a nicer note, i've began pimping out my first airsoft gun (ICS M4 SIR). Just ordered a foregrip, bipod, sling and ACOG with red dot. Now to see if I can persuade my parents to get me one of those visible green laser things for my birthday...

Posted by: JynX Mar 11 2011, 16:57

Reactor thing: I thought they'd managed to shut down most of the reactors in the affected area, I know the UN reported 4 being shut down successfully which from the Japan nuclear page is the number in the affected area...

RE: airsoft: Good choice my man, I'd recomend one of the PEQ 16 replicas from ebairsoft.com if you're looking for a green laser module (though folk I know have issues with their green lasers at lower temps where red ones work fine. Dave could probably give a rough explanation...)
What site you do you play at?

Fukushima is on the brink. News cite the Japanese government as saying that radioactivity in the facility is a thousand times above permitted values. They hope to stabilize the reactor by letting off radioactive steam and the population has been evacuated in a 10 km radius around the site.

@Mark: Sounds like him, all I really remember of the first day is sitting on top of the berm covering the front check point until we got evicted from Edinburgh because of fubar'd ROE ¬_¬

Re: oh-noes-reactor-mibbeh-go-boom-boom
One would assume that 10km is a tad short? Not to familiar with what to expect from meltdowns (epidemiology was always more interesting than fall out) and such...

Posted by: Daniel Mar 11 2011, 23:57

What is the actual danger from radioactive vapour? Presumably it doesn't emit radioactive energy. Inhalation then? Where's Dave when you need scientific answers...

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 11 2011, 23:57

A meltdown is not necessarily the greatest thinkable disaster as long as the gas pressure in the containment building does not endanger the structure's stability. If they let off steam and effectively risk radioactive contamination of the surrounding area, then the pressure must be considerably too high.

//edit

It may contain all kinds of sources of radiation, including those which are dangerous only if inhalated (Alpha and Beta-radiation) and those which cause considerable damage over a very long time.

Now they say the heads of the fuel rods are not covered with water anymore.

Posted by: Toadball Mar 12 2011, 00:07

Well this looks like it's going to be a pretty expensive mess...

Posted by: Mark-HH Mar 12 2011, 00:08

Depends on how it goes (if it does) It shouldn't do a Chernobyl if they can vent enough steam off. It may just end up like Long Island and be contained over a small area. Then again if it does go up like Chernobyl... It doesn't really bare thinking about.

Posted by: Toadball Mar 12 2011, 00:12

To be fair from what I've read the reactor design should prevent it going quite on the scale of Chernobyl even though it is a bit on the old side.

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 12 2011, 00:14

After revision today's quake is officially a "megaquake" now, with a magnitude of 9.1 among the most powerful events that took place in recorded history. The US geological service says it moved the earth's axis of rotation by 0.1 m.

Radioactive vapour or dust (or to give it it's technical term: fallout) is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: particles in the air that are radioactive (so yes, they do emit radiation). They're usually pretty sparse, but much easier to ingest than a lump of radioactive material (as they're airborne, rather than a lump of stuff you'd need to physically eat), which can cause lung cancer or radiation sickness. Best protection is a gas mask, I know some filters will protect against this sort of thing, but you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable about that sort of thing.

The chances of the plant going Chernobyl are pretty much non-existent. Though that's assuming the plant hasn't been damaged too much by the 'quake.

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 12 2011, 00:40

And that is as the Russkies were highhandedly enough to built a reactor out in the open air, almost doing without any sort of containment...

Posted by: Daniel Mar 12 2011, 00:50

Not quite as harmless as I imagined then.

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 12 2011, 00:53

From what I gather from the beeb, the issue is pressure building up in the reactor core after a cooling system failure (caused by an explosion somewhere in the plant during the 'quake). The containment housing for the core hasn't been damaged though, so the levels of radiation should be completely contained at the plant. So it's pretty much a choice between "release some radioactive gas into the atmosphere" or "cross your fingers and pray it doesn't blow up".

That said, other sources are saying there's evidence that containment housing may have been damaged, and the Japanese officials are sugar-coating the truth to prevent panic, in which case, well... I don't want to make people panic anymore than they already are... but if you do happen to be anywhere near south-east Asia right now, it may be worth considering a impromptu holiday.

I blame the paranoia surrounding nuclear power clouding the judgement of journalists, of course, so I'll go with the official explanation.

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 12 2011, 14:14

Yeah some people are really worked up by this. Our opposition calls for the government to shut down all nuclear power plants in Germany, as the incident in Japan would have shown that nuclear forces couldn't be controlled nor contained.

Why yes, Germany is frequently ravaged by tsunamis and nine-point-something earthquakes.

That's the bit that concerned me, there's no way for anyone (besides the people on site) to deduce how much damage was done to the containment and shielding by the earthquake itself.

Not to mention they're still getting severe aftershocks.

I have this vision of a mouse standing outside his mouse-hole shaking his fist at something far away in vain (probably someone slamming a door and knocking over all his pots... Annoyingly the for side won based upon dodgy representation of statistics in context of the argument and sensationalism instead of solid facts. sad.gif

Needless to say, last teaching session of my uni career finished, I now has the fear ohmy.gif

Bucket List: Travel. That's it really. Worry about the settling down later.
Item 2: If I like another nation, try the expat thing for awhile. If I like Canada when I holiday there I am thinking of saving up and going back for the 2 year working holiday.
Item 3: Consider a post grad qualification, likely a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Studies. This is to take affect in the event of item 2 being a non-event.

Posted by: Toadball Mar 19 2011, 02:57

Bucket List:
Item 1: Get a self perpetuating zero effort source of income.
Item 2: Consider traveling but be sure absolutely not to as it will involve far, far to much effort and ultimately dealing with students. (Was mobbed by the sods when I visited Cairns in the September.)*.
Item 3: Consider settling down but be sure not to due to the lack of finicial gain or high effort input.

*I do not consider myself a "student" as I earn my living, do stuff more productive than drink coffee and complain that the government I voted in has turned out to be shower of c...s despite it being common knowledge that every government is a shower of c...s and dress in a manner that does not make me look like I've fallen backwards through an industrial waste rag store

Gah slow day @ work.

Looks like rain setting in, perhaps no evening stroll for me.
Luckily, I have tea. (Sometimes I think I live in the wrong country)

@Indigo; Canada in August/September for 2-3 weeks depending on finances and other things coming up, else March next year.
UK and Europe on the agenda, just not this year.

If I like Canada quite a bit I am going to return home, save like a crazy person for 12 months here @ DBCDE and then go over on the two year working holiday program. You only need $4k CAD to do it, so if I show up with 20k I am sure they will not be at all fussed about me. Going to check out Toronto and Halifax as likely contenders as I have contacts in both.

I seem to recall you having problems with your intestines before. Did the doctor(s) mention that as a possible indication? (just wondering in case we ever experience similar problems, we'll know that it needs to be taken seriously)

Posted by: pMASTER Mar 26 2011, 16:15

As a matter of fact they managed to work around a coloscopy for years despite some certain indications, always argueing that my spleen might be the cause of my troubles.
I'm lucky that this thing I prolly had for quite a while turned malicious just now. Odds are it's just a spontaneous mutation and I'm over and done with it as soon as they've removed it. Matters are worse if it's a genetic disposition, because that means it might return. That said, what might happen in ten years is no business of mine now.

It's the same here. Feeling lightheaded? Take an aspirin. Suddenly lost your vision? Take an aspirin. Got all the signs of a heart-attack? Take two aspirins. You've been shot in the head, and your legs got severed by a truck running you over while you lay there, bleeding to death? Well alright, we'll take a look (and then give you an overdose of aspirins) ... Most doctors probably are major shareholders of aspirin producers. Useless sods, ever last one of them. I'll undergo surgery on Thursday the 5th.
I had a week full of crap - literally biggrin.gif - but the findings are positive. The cancer is limited to just one spot of my colon and they can completely remove it. Histological exploration found no genetical disposition whatsoever, it's just a spontaneous mutation of a formerly harmless tumor.
I'm some lucky dude. If the tumor hadn't started to bleed, they might not have found it in time.

Not quite, since I intend to send him something much more entertaining and memorable. I can't mention any specifics since it would spoil the fun (like photographs, measurements), but it involves one hot young blond Swedish female law student completely opposed to capitalism and the military, and one hot young French female biology student that likes to hug trees and free animals from medicine test sites with a thorough disliking of any product not made in a derelict building full of pot-smoking quasi-intellectuals, tied up and gagged so pMASTER can either rant at them unopposed for their views made up entirely of flawed logic or, well you can pretty much figure out the other possibility judging by the caravan-sized box of condoms and some Viagra just in case blues.gif

Presumably it's designed for people who haven't already got BAF or PMC, but I could be wrong there, perhaps BIS are instead trying to reach out to the fans who buy the game multiple times, and build a house of the cases.

(It'd be easier if games still came in boxes, then the disc was in a smaller case that was inside the box... whatever happened to that, anyway? Why'd everyone switch to these new plastic cassette cases? I liked cardboard boxes! You could put stuff in them! If someone's robbing your house, they aren't going to steal a videogame from a shelf, they're going to go right for the silverware... you could store all your riches in those boxes, and none would be any the wiser!)

Too bad Andi can't make it to the royal wedding, I heard there are going to be loads of anarchists, treehuggers, hippies, islamists and other socialism-loving scum. Who's going to join us in forming a unit to crack down on these idiots (and break many skulls in the process)? We shall call it the "Queen's Germanic Legion". For our march song I have selected the following:

It's the tune from the Great Escape, but with the word "England" replaced by "Pork chops" (that will piss off both the islamists and the other groups I mentioned since most of those pale skinned bastards are vegetarian.)

Or better yet, put a massive bomb in a van parked right next to the demonstrators, label it "British Army", blow it up while they're trashing the van and blame the IRA naughty.gif

Such a pity they outlawed mustard gas cry3.gif

Anyways, we'll need to send Andi some souvenirs, like scalps from ginger treehuggers and burned beards from those islamofascists. It will make him smile if he reads that protesters got their own picket signs inserted up the back side and had to be surgically removed, I'm sure that will cheer him up biggrin.gif

Posted by: pMASTER Apr 28 2011, 17:41

I'm in a pretty bad shape actually. They removed a third of my colon and the rest isn't working properly... well, it could be worse. I'm going to hit a chemo therapy in two weeks, though.

Posted by: pMASTER May 7 2011, 01:20

What the heck is going on there, anyway? I didn't get it...

Posted by: Daniel May 7 2011, 10:04

BIS are drip feeding info on an upcoming project in the form of hacks from a fictional Persian hacker group. It's all very exciting. So far we've found an outline of an Astute class submarine, a profile of an SBS Cpt called Miller and a battleplan of a map of modern Europe. There are also lots of Chinese and Iranian references dotted throughout.

There's nothing yet to suggest whether it's a new patch, a DLC, an expansion or a new game.

Posted by: Mark-HH May 7 2011, 11:03

We've pretty much covered the latest hack, all signs pointing to possible physics implementation and more Iranian involvement. Check http://armaenigma.com/index.php?title=Saturday,_May_7th_2011,_18:00_CEST

The sphere and wall animation could be symbolic, or it could tie in with the previous clues, an Astute class submarine and the phrase "The world will change!", towards a physics hint.

My first chemotherapy cycle is gonna hit tomorrow. After having run out of luck so many times, I hope I'll be spared of the adverse effects at least.

Posted by: Wittmann May 9 2011, 15:31

If not... can you rock one of these?

Posted by: pMASTER May 10 2011, 16:12

It's not about the hair. I couldn't care less about it, actually I've always wondered how I'd look if I was to shave my head. But chemotherapy can always damage benign cells and mine may mess with neurons. Sometimes it's even a reason for a premature end of therapy, they say.
I already have difficulties swallowing due to irritated nerves, I hope it doesn't add up to that.

It's the infusion which I've gotten today, then I'll be getting pills for two weeks. They're less harmful.

I guess.

Also, wouldn't it have been more accurate to have Carver put his "straw" in Indigo's "communist" rather than the other way around. Straws aren't know for their re-usability, where as communists will swallow anything that the party releases, again and again.

I had the same surgery perfomed on me and wouldn't want to move even a bit in the first days afterwards. Well, not that I had been able to anyway.

Dude, you're an politician. Just hire a "professional" to "take care of things".

There are two ways you can interpret that statement. Either's good.

Basically, you're saying that everybody has their price. That's an awesome thought.

If pMaster is ever elected to an office I would like to run an experiment.

As a public servant we have a running joke that the show "Yes, Minister" is actually a reality series.

The part I want to check with pMaster is the other running joke - that if you get a politician and a public/civil servant in the same room and have them watch Yes, Minister they will both laugh... at different times.

So last night I went round to some friends for dinner. One of their number is in Melbourne and comes home today. Naturally we felt we should show him how much we missed him. Small bedroom + 400 balloons = fun times. I cannot wait to see his face.

My Kingdom of Bavaria has a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJmjWRycUB4&feature=related, by the way. If it hadn't, someone needed to create a new country only for giving this marvelous piece of epic music the appropriate place.

A fluke.

"Don't ask, don't tell."

You're adopted, you just don't know it yet.

Your mother met your father, got him drunk, 3 months later they had a shotgun-wedding.

I hope that has started making you worried. There are thousands of possibilities naughty.gif

Deal with it! cool.gif

On a sadder note, I just heard that a German general might have been killed in action in Afghanistan today. W-T-F. The west suffers too much losses for that forsaken part of the world.

Posted by: Mark-HH May 28 2011, 23:12

Beeb says he was only injured opposed to the Afghan police chief that was killed in the blast.

Posted by: pMASTER May 29 2011, 01:22

Good that he survived. I'm afraid my government might have considered to pull out if such a high ranking officer had fallen.

Leave it on a shelf in your nearest supermarket. If you could add a label that says "finest ham" on it and a "0.99p reduced to clear" tag too, that'd be peachy smile.gif

Posted by: pMASTER May 30 2011, 16:59

Pff. Go ahead with that crap talking and I might actually do that, but also add a "Made in the United Kingdom" tag.

I don't see what you could possibly hope to achieve with that. Make people think you're English? We'd be even then, everyone thinks I'm German tongue.gif

Controversial! ohmy.gif

Actually I'm sort tempered and can't find a situation funny unless someone's getting hurt. You have to understand we're still a bit behind on profiling over here, haven't moved onto the new German stereotype yet tongue.gif

He's just worried you will be able to sue the federal government for hazardous working conditions leading to your present illness (it's complete rubbish, but if it enables you to live as a millionaire for the rest of your life at the expense of the German taxpayer, it might just be interesting to look into naughty.gif )
