Hello to the Armedassault.info community, i come to you today with a very important question, and that would be... what made Operation Flashpoint so great?
I have completed it many times, and think that it's one of the finest games ever created, but i wonder why that is...
If you ask anybody i can almost guarantee you that they'd say that they prefer OFP over ARMA or ARMA2, now, personally i have all 3 and i'd rather it as well, but i don't quite know why...
Would it be for the fact that it was one of the first games of it's kind to be open world, its deeply engaging story or its stunning design, personally i dont know but perhaps someone out there might know...

Cheers,
Lyaoz

i agree with you... OFP is THE best game ever. i love arma and arma 2 and play them every day, but i think OFP was so good because just like you said it was one of its first kind. the open world, and most importantly and non scripted gameplay - i hate it when i play other games and the mission is exactly the same every time, while with ofp/arma its a bit different every time (the way you can finish a mission and approach the enemy position etc), i think thats very important! i still play ofp today and check the ofp websites on a daily bases to check for new addons, missions etc.

In short, the community.

Elaborated, the community was not the ArmA community. The community was much less divided and addon makers didn't have to worry about cnuts ripping of their addons. Players were patient and let addon makers do their thing without pestering for a release day after day.

oh yeah and the community wasn't saturated with brain dead CS/CoD kiddies ¬_¬

The first of it's kind factor was great but the fact that there was a community that created the sheer volume of content that it did really kept the game going and kept people coming back for more imo.

Lot's of support from BIS.
A very active community.
Resistance - one hell of an expansion and one hell of a campaign.
Talking about Campaigns - good stories and memorable characters, to an extent.
Many more mods were available - FDF, CSLA, BAS ect - a combination I believe of a very active community and simpler modding requirements compared to the current engine and graphical advancement?
Good soundtrack I might add - I have all the music from the original OFP to this day tongue.gif

And lastly - better multi-player I believe. Almost every public server I visit now runs some version of Domination or Insurgency, there seem's to be fewer large scale or at least, well scripted and designed co-op missions for people to tackle. This is something I miss most. One of my fondest gaming memories was an epic OFP run on the OFP.info server running the BW mod - up all night ending with an epic several hour run on Kolgujev with current site staff, I remember there was Homer, X-Ray, posisbly Deadeye and Flyer all still up and alive and lots of noisy spectators who wanted us to die. Despite our best efforts to do so, the rambo tactics were working.

The game is brutally difficult, punishing every single "mistake", especially since as said it was the first of it's kind. The mission that came with the demo ("Ambush" the one were you first have to drive a jeep, then hitch a ride with a truck to reach the start-off point for the attack, assault a farm, then the town itself, get counterattacked by tanks and have to run to get extracted by helicopter, although I prefer to duke it out with the tanks) was the first mission of this kind I ever played. I spent most of that mission (and the first 10 attempts after that) mostly laying on the ground, frozen and not knowing what to do, since seemingly everything I did got me killed.

That mission is the perfect showcase for showing people why OFP (and ArmA2) are brilliant.

The campaigns were good (good enough character development, diverse types of missions), there was plenty of variety in weapons, vehicles etc. The soundtrack fit the game really well. What really built BIS' reputation for me were the new addons and missions that were included in patches like the Apache and Humvee. OFP patches were the first thing I downloaded when I got ADSL. Also Resistance was the best expansion to any game ever imo. Loads of additions and improvements to every single facet of Cold War Crisis.

OFP didn't need any addons, it was brilliant on it's own, addons just made it even better.

Why is it still great? Because it is still second to none. Even ArmA was not as great as its ancestor.

What made this game so good was the way it removed us from reality. Not just having a level to explore but an entire island to live on - really i grew up there. Still today i know my way around Malden as if it were my home. I remember the first time i installed surround sound on ofp and spilled my Ribena all over the desk when i got shot from behind.

What sums up OFP for me and why it was just so good was its control. Sniper TDM was single handedly the most gripping, suspense enticing, time ive spent in front of a computer. Hidden away in your bush on your own with the power of god at your mouse click looking for up to 2 hours for the tell tale signs of an enemy sniper. The sound of that shot PSHHOooooow from an SVD making you jump in that heart stopping moment not knowing if your about to be come a comical seagull or you can live on to take the next shot.

You could talk for hours on the great game and the downfalls of its life but i think one of the most grueling and eye-opening parts for me has been the wait for 'game 2'. From the disappointment and joke that was the first ArmA to ArmA II which for me goes somewhat towards being a worthy OFP successor.

I'm among the few who liked ArmA 1 more than ArmA 2. Damnit, I've spent hours for hours in great Coop. It almost felt like OFP, only with a more attractive look. ArmA 2 got too shiny fast, seeing the rivalry with CoD and the likes.

Assassins II, anyone? "Conquer an Island". Helluva mission!

But OFP had "the feeling" and everything of it. It was revolutionary when first released and that never lost the grip of me. The variety of possibilities was stunning. You could play every thinkable scenario and when you'd have enough of it, you dived into the mission editor and made a new one. Or you just populated the island (bad pun!), jumped on a motorcycle and rode from the southernmost cape to the northern tip of Everon. Ah, Everon! I loved St.Pierre. That was the most atmospheric place in the entire game.

And then the resistance campaign. Fuck me, what a masterpiece. Victor Troska for the win!

Why was OFP so good? As it was mentioned in the posts above, something new, huge area and variety how to finish the mission, massive community, tons of addons/mods (altough the beginning was quite funny, I remember the "Red Baron" which was basically reskinned original Cessna and so on:) and it was amazing how the graphics evolved in that game using all the various addons.

But I may be a black sheep here, I prefer ArmA2 to OFP (or AA1), graphics, realism with ACE and overall the engine has evolved a bit. Altough creating a new one instead of building on the ofp one (if I am not mistaken) would be nice, even with my computer and all the time I spent on various graphic settings, tweaks etc., it still does not always run smoothly. But that is not the point of this topic.

Anyway, I still would not mind a good OFP game as mentioned in OFP section (well, edit, I forgot we are in ofp section of the forum:).
