Number of active armed offender incidents involving mass casualties since 1996 stand at zero. Several cells in the planning stages of an attack on the public record as disrupted. We have been granted more powers to interdict,and can move to resolution rapidly, before targets can put their plans into motion. Control orders allow ongoing monitoring of persons of interest with controls on their behaviors and associations beyond the limitations of police or court imposed bail.

Lone Wolf attacks such as Parramatta are an issue as with everywhere else in the Western world and freely available encrypted communications and increased awareness of law enforcement methodology can make it difficult to keep ahead of offenders and conduct effective investigations without tipping our hand too early. We are fortunate in that the importation of semi automatic firearms is difficult, organised crime is hesitant to supply illicit firearms to CT targets as that's a fast track to police and intelligence service action against them and we are able to suspend the passport of those who travel overseas and engage in fighting. Hard to wage jihad at home when you can't get home!

Glad to see the latest AAO incident was stopped by swift intervention by German police - I admire the intervention tactics you guys have for these incidents! Unfortunately, that's not the case at all. Train passengers and even residents of the nearby town where the train was emergency-stopped had to live this through almost completely on their own. It was sheer luck (and incredible luck at that) that a special weapons and tactics team was in the very same town at that moment while heading home from a deployment.
And it is sheer luck nobody has died (yet?). Two victims are in life-threatening condition after the ungrateful fucking cave dweller inflicted multiple stab wounds to their heads.

Australian police have recently adopted tactics from European services, the Canucks and a few US forces. If the opinion is formed that an offender has used or is attempting to use deadly force and has access to further victims they will rapidly move to confront, draw attention onto themselves and stop the threat - whether that results in arrest or use of deadly force. Funnily enough the media took a racist insult someone screamed at the gunman and shoved it into his mouth, trying to construct a Neonazi attack even after video footage of the relentless assault had shown an obviously Arabic man.

On a related note, while this summer's temperatures aren't as ferocious as last year's the humidity levels are thoroughly insane. Right now the air is so humid the eye spots rainbows without a cloud or a drop of rain in the skies.

A crazy criminal or terrorist might and remember: According to the government, police and judicial system alike all criminals and terrorists have been crazy since at least the early 70's. Psychiatric issues are so much easier as a scapegoat than admitting the many failures of countless governments.

True. The attack of Munich seems to have been the exception to the rule, though. From what I gather I can almost, almost feel pity for him. If what is reported is true, the shooter was mobbed over the course of seven years. Mobbed as in "seriously tormented", not as in "not able to cope with stress", and including severe bodily harm and robbery.

The case, although it has luckily not been a terrorist attack after all, raises numerous questions about immigration related crime (the victims whom he deliberately targeted had been Turks and Kosovans), the politically-willed indulgence of the justice apparatus and the apathy of an increasingly dysfunctional society that's actually a ill-functioning coexistence of parallel societies.

Meanwhile an explosion has occurred outside a wine bar in Ansbach killing one and injuring a dozen people. First it was a "gas explosion", now a "deliberate action", so in about a week's time it will be a terrorist attack.

Similarly an Afghan friend of the gunman in Munich has been arrested for knowing about the plans he had. My prediction is based on previous "incidents": In a few days he will have visited terrorist websites, the next day he was a part of a group, then the video comes out of him swearing allegiance to daesh and in a few more days after that an intelligence service will find a long-lost report in the trash can about this guy and how he should have been under surveillance but couldn't because of government regulations after which everyone shrug their shoulders and carry on blissfully ignorant.

Given he targeted those of his own ethnicity is is far more in line with US style shootings such as Columbine and Sandy Hook. A meticulously planned and executed attack that is an extreme display of hatred stemming from perceived injustice or a desire for revenge. He had been reading a book on school shootings including case studies of why young people kill and how they go about mass casualty incidents. If your target are the unbelievers you want a soft target full of Westerners, not to lure in your peers and ferociously target anyone of Arab or Turkic appearance that fills your sights, letting white people flee. The suicide once there were no more desired targets of opportunity is also telling - no last confrontation against the infidel to become a martyr. The jihadist will want that confrontation or an attempt to take a first responder with them at the end. This is a symptom of a problem that has plagued the US now finding it's way to Europe alongside terrorism - religious and political.

I don't know what scares me more - the self radicalised lone wolf with very little window to detect and avert before they strike and attempt to kill as many 'crusaders' as they can before being 'martyred', or the strange loner kid who rocks up one day with a gun or knife and kills their classmates, teachers, even primary school children = with no other goal than to achieve the "high score" in regards to fatalities before being stopped by police or committing suicide when there are no more victims to execute. As they are not part of the "other" or on anyone's radar for their religious beliefs or ethnicity, they can he harder to detect and avert. There were always the weird or antisocial ones in school and uni - though we never thought they were likely to turn up and massacre all of us.

Never thought I'd praise Howard's mandatory gun buy back after Port Arthur though sitting where I am now - I think he has saved us from a whole load of potential hurt and made it a lot harder for our home grown terrorists to acquire a weapon with greater firepower potential than two general duties members with Glocks.

Ansbach appears to have backfired on would be bomber. Security turned him away from the event so he went to a bar to detonate and scored an own goal, luckily. Good on those security officers, no doubt they saved many lives.

If he had thought of buying a ticket, they would not have turned him away.
