Armed Assault Info Forums _ OT Discussions _ What is this?

So I noticed alot of the ArmA rifles have this attachment on the side. I served in the Army years ago and I dont reconise this device...

Its the rectangle box shaped device on the side of the barrel.

I'd say it's an AN/PEQ laser device.

A question rather to be put into the military discussions thread, by the way.

Ah, wasn't sure if it belonged there, that thread seemed like it was more about the politics of war... my bad.

On a side note... if they are attached in ArmA, why don't they work? wacko.gif

Probably because the engine does not support it. I remember having seen similiar things made by addon makers for OFP but neither of them did really work.

Through config tweaking the laser effect can be simulated as done by the LAM module of Martin_BM's Mk23s (http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?cat=news&id=443) however it produces an always on effect but a nice one none the less (that pistol pack is still my favourite for armedassault smile.gif )

Don't know how the "laser" in that pack works, but the purpose of the real-life AN/PEQ series is that it can only be seen with night vision goggles on, which I doubt is doable in ArmA in any feasible manner (without performance hit, side-effects, Ai reaction etc).

the Mk.23 pack simply uses a red dot for the crosshair to simulate the laser from the LAM pointless if playing with no crosshairs.

ACE has managed to make IR flares so one would assume something similar should be possible, almost certainly wrong though smile.gif

the real peq has IR and Visible lasers.

AN/PEQ-1 SOF Laser Marker (SOFLAM) is the SOF-specific laser rangefinder.
AN/PEQ-2 has two infrared laser emitters—one narrow beam used for aiming the rifle, and one wide beam used for illuminating targets, like a flashlight. The beams can only be seen through night vision goggles.
AN/PEQ-3 Laser is equipped with an aiming laser and an illumination beam. The beams are only visible with night vision equipment.
AN/PEQ-4 is a Class 4 laser pointing and illuminating system capable of providing illumination and pointing capabilities for directing naval gunfire at ranges of 15 km or greater.
AN/PEQ-5 is a mil-spec laser sight and projects a visible red dot.
AN/PEQ-6 is a laser aiming module (LAM) designed for use with the Mark 23 pistol and other various pistols.
AN/PEQ-7 Multi-Aiming Device (MAD) P/N 15202G00 has 3 selectable lasers for different missions.
AN/PEQ-14. The Integrated Laser/White Light Pointer (ILWLP) is a small, lightweight device that can. be handheld or mounted on the M9 pistol.
AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target. Pointer Illuminator Aiming Light.
AN/PEQ-16 provides a highly collimated beam of infrared energy for weapon aiming and an adjustable focus infrared beam for target illumination. The IPIM is designed to withstand the shock of heavy weapons. The White Light Illuminator provides target identification/illumination without night vision devices.
