In this article:
Grado sr-80 new life in 10 minutes (quick mod, quick repair)

Married with children. Sometimes a tough environment for - among other things - HiFi equippement. One day my one year old daugter decided to test the durability of Grado sr-80 hardphone concept (Not the sound quality, which is very good in my honest opinion). She found it out to be quite weak. These headphones can’t handle much physical forces. Less than your average headphones. Fragile plastic constuction seem to be one of the weakest I’ve seen in such a device.

Special problem points with Grado sr-80

First
1) Metal rod connecting to plastic arc. Get easily loose, after that disconnected. (Glued it couple of times)
2) In this case my daughter was able to easily break the arc in two.
3) Resulting from this, the mission critical piece of the headphones became “a disc in the end of the lineâ€

Second
4) Those earpads gets off and missing easily

So there I was, my beloved piece of HiFi was broken beyond glue-it-together repair. It was useless, but I’d hate to throw it away.

Then I examined Peltor H9A Noise protection headset I happened to have. Just a standard piece of hearing protection for general usage. I removed the black plastic pads and found out those Grado sound producing units would fit fine in there.

How to do it:
1) Draw out intented 'cuts' with a pen to the noise protector, this cut allows the cord fit in with the black pads.
2) Saw the cuts, I used standard power saw.
3) Fit the sound producing units in. I had luck, it went straight in.
4) Enjoy.

Final product

+ Looks cool
+ Cheap
+ 5000% more robust than the original
+ Quick and easy to make
+ Much less external noise (Baby crying) than before

- Sound quality is reduced some 20-30%. The sound is a bit muffled, some loss in detail. Maybe open mounting would result better sound quality → more difficult to make right, wouldn’t look so cool.

Topic moved, it has nothing to do with ArmA-related problems itself (ArmA is not causing the problems with the headphone) smile.gif

Granvik: We do not allow pictures over 100kb in size to be posted directly, please hotlink pictures over 100kb in size instead of posting them directly in the future.
