Strafbat (Penalty Battalion), Zvezda(Star), Gates of Thunder, Come and See, 9th Company, The Breakthrough.... well but too bad that ordering them is pretty much pain-in-the-ass xO

"Syriana"
with George Clooney (Oscar winning perfomance), Jeffrey Wright, Matt Damon & Chris Cooper

12/10

The book "See no Evil" of Robert Baer that provided the screenplay for the movie is also very recommendable.

Martine offers Terry (Jason Statham) a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street. She targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal.

Wouldn't really agree with pMaster's 10 out of 10, but yeah, it was quite decent. Saw it on the plane heading back from the Caribbean with the screen mounted into the seat in front of me, but the sound and picture quality were just crap, and there were no subtitles whatsoever, so I didn't catch all the details. However, still a 7/10.

There are only a few movies that are capable of really captivating me even when I watch them again and again, and Syriana is surely on the very top of that list.

My five all-time-favourites, not in order:

Syriana
Troy
Kingdom of Heaven
Blood Diamond
The Crimson Rivers

An American military advisor who fights the Samurai in Japan of the 19th century gets captured by them, learns to understand their way of living and at last joins them in their last fight against imperial troops

8/10

Amidst the independence war, a former soldier who first hesitates to fight the British is swept into the battle when his familiy is threatened and then takes a lead stance in the fight against the troops of Cornwallis...

7/10

-1 point for historical inaccuracies and an overdose of "hooray we can fight an die american patriotism"

I must protest to the portrayel of the British in the Patriot in the highest possable terms. For example the church massicre which is not only complete load of bollocks but is clearly based on the events in Oradour, attempting to compare the redcoats to Nazis. The movie also seemingly happens to ignore slavery as an issue, making Mel Gibsons charicter innocent. The movies a complete load, i cant stand it.

You've just happened to bring all the points of criticism listed in the english Wikipedia. tongue.gif

In every fiction there is a true core. According to playwright Robert Rodat the fictional character of cruel Colonel William Tavington is based on up to seven redcoat senior and lower officers, the most notable being Sir Tarleton, who was indeed known for an uncompromising and ruthless way of fighting. The incident where an church entirely filled with villagers is burnt down is indeed imaginary, the act itself is not. There is a reported case dated to November 1777 where English soldiers knowingly burnt down a house in Northern Carolina with nine injured Continentals in it.

Apart from that, I don't see a reason why to be offended by a purely fictional plot. I also do not agree that the movie depicts all British soldiers per se as brutal criminals, in fact there are enough warriors on the side of the colonists that are just alike dislikeable.

Speaking of the Nazis, can I feel offended now by just alike largely fictional plots of movies such as Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and all the other war flicks that generalizingly depict all Germans of that time as perfidious, malicious and brutal?

It's only a movie, and as such it was entertaining.

I just think The Patriot seemed to carry an underlying message, as with most Gibson movies. I would also disagree that Band of Brothers in particular does that, infact i would say on the most part ww2 flicks out of 1970's Kellys Heroes syndrone dont portray Germans as perfidious, malicious and brutal. Even before with films like a the Battle Of Britain and a Bridge too far presented the story on behalf of the Germans aswell as 'the good guys'. Private Ryan probably does, but then thats not a very good movie, not for me anyway. I rate movies like Das Boot and Stalingrad much higher.

That's because they're the bad guys!

Sheesh! You're talking like these movies are made somewhere other than Hollywood!

I mean, are Russians shown any differently in the anti-communism movies?

All of them? From the American point of view the British were the bad guys just alike. 'The patriot' does very well depict that atrocities were committed by both sides.

And as for an agenda in movies featuring Mel Gibson...I'm not sure. It probably depends on the director. He is a very good actor, that's beyond doubt in my eyes. It's obvious though that he favours roles of strong and charismatic leaders. 'The Passion of the Christ' and 'Apocalypto' surely do, although it's hard to track it...'We were soldiers once' is a very good movie as well, despite featuring utterly strong chauvinism and jingoism.

No, but that's generalization too that is simply wrong.

No, the most war movies do. 'Saving private Ryan' for example comes up with a clearly anti-German agenda, featuring fictive atrocities of fictive SS troops in the aftermath of D-Day and it also depicts a prototype-like German soldier as cowardly and as inhumane enough to shoot the American soldier that saved his life out of mercy. The entire 'Band of Brothers' series shows German soldiers as in any way inferior to their foes and cowardly and sneaky just as well. There are only a few conciliable moments in the entire season: At the very far end, where Easy Company Guys watch some villagers that rebuild their destroyed city, and later on when they listen to the speech of a German general to his flayed men. Of course you can ask now "What do you expect, the Nazis were the bad guys!". The same goes for the British though. What did you expect, you were the bad guys for the Americans during these years. It's still no reason to feel remarkably offended.

EDIT: Well, lets make something on-topic:
It depends of the viewer too, when I saw BoB I didn't find any anti-german propaganda, most of the acts showed might have been by the allies or the Germans alike.

Yeh and I as a German viewer cannot help but notice some sort of agenda whilst Britons can. Britons cannot help but notice some sort of agenda in 'The patriot' as well whilst I as a German can.
The discussion we hold here is plainly pointless.
