It was 2 degrees that morning. The day was sunny and warm.

Canberra winters are cold however that is reserved for the morning and evening hours. Days are usually in their teens with clear, sunny skies.
Clear skies meaning frost though...

I think it is the UK that has the problem here. Any nation where a summer day of 19 degrees results in t shirts, swim wear and mass consumption of ice cream has it all wrong.

Years ago i was in Spain with some friends waiting for one of them to finish taking a leak on an old stream bed away from the road. It was morning and on the wall above us were hundreds of webs covered in dew. We were poking them randomly whilst we waited. We watched a big butterfly flap past and land next to one of these webs near us when suddenly a massive trap door tarantula spider jumps out and kills it. We look at each other then suddenly realise what were sat next to with these hundreds of webs, crap ourselves, and run away back to the car. smile.gif

O2 Object Animation

Got a door im trying to open.
Followed Mondkalb's Tutorial to the letter - nothing. (his saved .p3ds and config/cfg dont match anyway?! It'd never work in game!)
Followed BIS's own tutorial to the letter - still nothing. (bits missing in this that are in Mondkalb's Tut?)
About to go dig up my 3rd tutorial to follow but im gunna ask here too.

How the f*ck do you do animation? blink.gif
  • Select door in resolution LOD name it "door1"
  • In Fire Geometry LOD copy pasta "door1"
  • In Memory LOD 2 points for door hinge axis name it "door1axis"
  • Still in Memory LOD another point for the in game menu called it "doorbell"
  • Define everything in the config, model and stringtable and ... thats where i fall flat on my face well CTD from in game.

CTDs usually stem from the config or model.cfg trying to refer to something on a model that doesn't exist (or models that don't exist), check your points are named properly (remember that it's case sensitive)

The coding side of things has always been a blur to me, never managed to get my head round it in this or anything lol

I copied my files direct from Mondkalb's Tutorial which is the main locked tutorial over on the O2 modeling section on Biforums and tried it word for word including the german names and still no luck. Your right i expect im missing a coma or spacebar somewhere or a word is wrong from german to english translation.

The object that is rotating is called "Door"
The axis is called "Door_Achse"
The in game menu trigger is called "Door_knoph"

Ive checked all the upper and lower case letters (including the uppercase A in Achse and lowercase k in knoph), corrected the numerous file naming errors like TUT_Wall\ missing an 's' (TUT_Walls\) and TUT_Wall_3x3m.p3d reading TUT_Wand ... checked the file structure, correct names in O2 and tried every last way of putting "Door" in different files, different vertices etc .... im lost lol
All made more the frustrating that this is 'the' tutorial to follow ... BIS trying to kill off A2 modding in favour of A3? unsure.gif

edit: 18:30 - Looks like Mondkalb faked the animation part of his tutorial. Nets full of folks looking for help on it ...
edit: 19:41 - Gunna try Frankenstein-ing the paperwork from another other .cfg/config surrender.gif

Is the wrong way of writing a model path. It should look like this:

This is the point where I get to act smug because that's exactly what I said was probably the issue tongue.gif

Also, I wouldn't bother with the stringtable for now, it's just going to cause issues, just define your object names like this until you've got everything working:

That way if something goes wrong, you know it's not that you've fucked up the stringtable tongue.gif

It's handy to have something to reference, so you should probably grab the big sample model for ArmA.1, (which also includes model.cfg and config.cpp files for you to look over), the syntax is essentially the same, just double-check the classes you're inheriting from exist between games.

Why is that Mondkalb blokes tutorial stickied anyway? Its completely wrong! BIS has to know that. For it to be the recommended tutorial guide by the company for newcomers to the modding community they're either deliberately setting up new guys to fail or really don't care about their fan base. Its crap like this that puts me off buying their products ....

Animations usually only work if you binarize your PBO. I don't know why this is, but it's the only way I've managed to get them to work. To be honest, I don't fully understand model.cfg files, I'm inclined to believe they're witchcraft.

(Jahve explained it to me once - something about the model.cfg being merged with the p3d, I think you can have a model.cfg and it not be binarized, but you have to write it differently. Like I said, probably witchcraft.)

After 14 hours of non-stop grind at 00:45 Carver managed to code and animate 2 doors ohmy.gif
Mondkalb had got his p3d's mixed up and put 'TUT_Door' instead of 'TUT_Wall' in the .cfg animation section *facepalm*

I look like this > Malajn.gif so going to bed.

ps: If your wondering why its not an in game shot BinPbo now refuses to pack telling me "Binarize.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." then CTDs ... But thats for tomorrow to fix!

So i understand a bit how these work now. BinPbo now does its job no CTDs. My issue now is in game theres nothing. The model is there, the ladder works, but nothing to do with the 2 door animations. I'm guessing its the menu options not showing up where it goes wrong but thats coding again and i get stuck lol

Open_Door and Open_Door2 are the two user animation classes for the two doors. Im thinking it might be cause they're not defined through the skeleton something correctly? Mondkalb tries to define everything through his own class via "TUT_obj_skeleton" which i think is causing it to fail smile.gif

edit: Also as a weird outcome of the anim working in o2, in game the second door is not solid despite it being defined in the Fire Geo LOD and Geo LOD?! lol

The geometry problem seem like it'll be an issue with the actual geometry model, rather a coding error (if it was, the resolution LOD door would be displaced too). It might also be what's causing your issue activating the animations ingame. (AFAIK it uses one of the geometry LODs to determine if the player is looking at the door)

Redid the geo LOD and fire LOD and tested solid in game so yup thats fixed smile.gif Still no in game anim lol
Just tested the ruin model and thats not appearing either rolleyes.gif

edit: its midnight again ... just finished my 4th rewrite using a 4th found script someone paraded as working only to find it doesn't.

Yes, that's Jimmes Wales, founder of the wiki. And a good news (I guess), now Wales and Sanger articles are a tad more objective, I recall reading wonders of Wales and sh*t of Sanger a few years ago in the wiki.

EDIT: BTW, Witt, since you work in the Police, and you're a volunteer in I-don't-remember-what-but-looks-like-SAR do you have the National Emergency Plan, the various different contingency plans and Communications Plan? I could use it for the uni.
